About

As a teen, Julie Serrano exchanged art lessons for babysitting with her friend’s sister. Her artistic style has undergone numerous evolutions in the decades since, ranging from abstraction to impressionism and portraiture. Presently, she is greatly inspired by the awe she experiences while observing everyday life. She falls in love with her subjects: oil boiling in water, popovers resting on a counter, the attitude shown in the nod of a chin. The world moves her to paint. Julie is attentive to demands of the subject when choosing a medium, be it oil, cold wax, encaustic, egg tempera, acrylic, or print. She loves figures, still lifes, reflective surfaces and woodscapes, and is newly excited by abstraction in all the above.

Since retiring from a 35-year career as an Expressive Arts Psychotherapist, Julie has devoted the bulk of her energy towards art. Julie’s work has been featured in venues in NY, MA, NH, and ME. In addition to numerous one person shows, Julie has often received First in Show in group exhibitions and has received grants, honors and awards including Individual Artist’s Award from the NH Commission on the Arts. She has shown at Universities: Plymouth State, Boston University and Dartmouth College.

Julie’s Education includes a Bachelor’s degree from University of New Hampshire and an MA from Lesley College Graduate School, in addition to attending group studies in art with a number of teachers.

Julie’s art and psychotherapy practice has been deeply informed by spiritual practices, and she is a proud mother and grandmother.
